Doctors

Dear Michelle,

I grow more skeptical of my doctor with each visit.

I’ve been going to him for a few years now.  Yesterday, he walks into the office and and starts asking questions.  “How old are you?  Married? Any kids?….”

Doesn’t he write this shit down?!

I told him I had a cold this weekend.  He said I probably have allergies and should take Claritin.

What!???

I looked for Claritin notepads in the waiting room on my way out.

    EXACTLY!!

Denis is convinced that I got to the doctors to reconfirm my belief that they either don’t know shit or that they have no common sense. Last year I went to the eye doctor because my eyes were irritated with allergies. He recommended some $40 drops which I used for 3 days (or until my eyes broke out in blisters from the drops) I rushed back to him and his response was to give me something stronger. I objected and asked if there was a treatment option that didn’t require a pill and he responded “yeah, you could try a cold compress twice a day” Why was this not the first course of action? The only lesson I can share is to ask if there is a non pill option and always be your own advocate in a Dr’s office. In their defense, If I had to see 20 patients an hour I probably couldn’t keep them straight and I definetly would not make the time to read all of the literature on the medications that was available for every illness. So we have to do that for ourselves (and still pay them the big bucks!!)

    Aaron,

My doctor has a laptop in each exam room. Last time I went he noted that I was there at about the same time last year with similar symptoms. He refernced that what he prescribed last year, didn’t have a more immediate effect and gave me a prescription for something better this go around; noting that it probably was seasonal allergies, resulting in a sinus infection. I find that he is quick to give me free samples, that he listens, and knows who I am when I go there. He even makes reference to my scandanavian fiance, which next time I am sure he will call my wife since I went there before the wedding.
Jack V. Diteodoro is on point.

Doctors should know better since men usually don’t go to doctors very often. (unless of course it relates to the penis)
