Harriman S.P.

I thought I would start a new post cause the other one had a ton of comments, and I wanted to drop some ideas. ( maybe there should be an activities category)

Okay here’s the poop: three sites at Beaver pond campground, two tents per site, one car per site, and no alcohol (so get creative), the forecast is for it to be cooler than it has been with a High of 58, and a 40% chance of rain, so bring rain gear and tarps.

Friday night, I guess Michelle and I will try to pull together some cheese and crackers, and other assorted munchies, but don’t expect to much as Michelle has been cutting out the sugar.

Saturday Morning, I figure it will be a while before the second shift shows, so I think there will be time for eggs and bacon (new bacon press, MMMmmm) and Coffee.

Saturday lunch I have no idea, so post comments on what might be appealing to you. think quick and easy, as we’ll want to do our activities.

Saturday evening, I have no idea, but since apple picking will be going on, on Sunday, me thinks, that an apple crisp might be in order for dessert. Maybe we can do something like pork chops and apple sauce, or apple chutney, or something along those lines, oh, oh, or maybe we can do something that just screams autumn, like lots of root vegetables; whateva discuss below.

Sunday morning I am up for having a quick easy breakfast and a big glass of get the hell out followed by apple picking. Again suggestions from all are welcome; yes even butters, boo, and Norm.

I will try to steal as much wood from my parents as possible, since they need to get rid of bad wood before the winter. I am thinking that somewhere in there should be hard apple cider, or cocoa with brandy, or warming drinks all around(again thinking of being creative with alcohol).

I think that with the end of the indian summer in sight, this will be a great weekend, for warm fires, warm drinks, great food, and awesome friends. Okay so step up, and throw down some good ideas for grub and ways to improve our event.

With all the love in the world,

DMAC

I hate you all….finally a big trip on the east coast that I can possibly make and I can’t go because I have a trip planned for the past year…(Club sponsored Trail Run and Raffle, and I’m the treasurer)

Anyway….I will be camping, with campfires and I can get my drink on. Apple crisp is already on my menu, for a quick and easy breakfast, I always fall back on some bagels or a cereal bar, but I’m sure you guys can some up with a better idea.

The cool thing is that I’ll have a 4 man tent all to myself….

Another cool thing about having a big ass cooler, is that if you loan it out to someone to have a huge party (with a band and catered food) you unexpectedly may have it returned with over 6 cases of beer and ice to boot. I have enough beer to last me for the rest of the year. (remember I can’t drink that much with Dawn pregnant, she gets jealous)

  2. Lester Says:

Bag Lunches? So we can be active and on the go?
    Jen wants HOT apple cider.
What do you call a leper in a hot bath? Stew!
Beef stew, cider, and apple crisp. Maybe we can have some of Norm’s tears too
Bacon press? I ain’t cleanin no bacon!
2 dutch ovens, maybe three. one for stew, one for crisp, one for bread(?)
    Michelle is off of sugar?
Since I read her book it’s all about giving up High Fructose Corn syrup for me. Talk about hard. It’s in everything. That has been really tough, but I’ve done it since Dad said I couldn’t.

  3. Michelle Says:

How about we use two griddles and make breakfast paninis? cinnamon raisin bread, gruyere, pancetta,(or sliced andouille saussage) maybe add blueberry jam to make sure we include fruit?

No bacon grease but still includes bacon flavor.

Our neighbor Jen said she makes mean port beef stew. If you don’t have a specific recipe in mind, I say we give it a shot.

I can do the grocery shopping, I just need ingredient lists so I don’t forget anything. Do you bring deli meat for the bagged lunch or bring from home?

So far we are borrowing three dutch ovens, the canvas tent, the two burner stove and propane

We will bring one griddle, lester can you bring one too?

  4. jen Says:

wow. Fancy breakfast, sounds really yummy. I’m not sure if we need the jam because the bread will be sweet. I second Jen’s stew.

  5. DMAC Says:

I am totally game for having neighbor Jen make a stew. Less work for us, and virtually no prep time just reheat and serve. Michelle is only off of sugar during the week, weekends are open, but that doesn’t mean out of control.

I will suggest the trifecta of keltys too. since we will have ten people and the screen house may only fit one table. Two would be a stretch but then we wouldn’t have a covered area to cook under.

I vote for the suasage pannini. Drizzled with Norm’s bitter tears of loneliness.
Are you kiddin’ bring the JAM!

  6. Tobi Says:

Newest forecasts on NOAA are cool and mostly sunny.

I’ll bring spikey cider, regular cider, mulling spices. We can heat ‘em up and yum! Does anyone have a steel carafe to keep it warm? If not, I’ll buy one.

I can also bring hot coacoa, and brandy or whiskey or something for that. D, bring Baby.

You are bringing The Hotel Tent, right? Cause even if it rains we can always play games in there :)

  7. DMAC Says:

Of course I will bring “baby” and a couple of thermoses as well.

Michelle and I have been debating bringing the Hotel. She says nay; I say Aye, mayhap I do, my cully.

I called the Orienteering club, all is welcome. There are even lesson’s for beginners but I think Les and I can teach, if need be. Beginners are on trails, advanced bushwack. I think Team Troest will place.

  8. Lester Says:

Andouiile? Why not breakfast sausage? We also have a hotel tent, and a few tarps. I’ll bring a griddle, and some thermii too. We have 14inch DO that can save you from hearing about it.

  9. DMAC Says:

Do you have a particular breakfast sausage that is as tasty as a Andouilie? What makes an andouilie, an andouilie?

Do I need to bring HIS chef box or do you have one that’s comprable. You wanna call me tonight to discuss the equipement list?

  10. Lester Says:

    I’ll call tonight.
    Comprable? I resent that.
I’m open to any sausage but my own on the grill.

  11. Michelle Says:

    Tobi,
How do you know about Baby? Have you been talking to Saima? So we should bring cards, yatzee and dominos? She is going to be so sad that she is not going, I may have to call her!!

  12. Nichole Says:

    Hey gang,
I hope you don’t mind me intruding, but I was invited to view you kick ass website and after reading your camping comments too each other I felt I should speak up and offer to bring something for the festivities. I just made a fresh batch of hummus the other night and am happy to bring that along as an appetizer with some crackers and other accouterments… veggies, cheese etc. Also, If Jen can’t make a stew, I can whip up a simple Italian Pizzaiola, Friday night for Saturday. Just let me know. As for drinks, well my vote is for warm apple cider with a shot, or two of Captain Morgan. I have a bottle of rum at my house, to which I’m happy to put in a shampoo bottle if it comes to that. So no worries! We will find away around the no alcohol rule. I’ll leave you guys to figure out breakfast as Rob and I most likely won’t be there till around 10:30 or 11. Let me know if that’s to late for orienteering, as we really want to go with you guys… Lastly, does anyone have the direction to camp site (and what are our numbers)? I’d feel better knowing if I had it on paper rather then relying on memory to get me there. Kids, we can discuss this in detail later… you know where to find me. Can’t wait to freeze my ass off!

  13. jen Says:

    not shampoo, nalgene

  14. Michelle Says:

I just sent out an email with the campsite numbers and directions that the campground sent to me.

Jen just called and said that she went ahead and did the shopping for stew (she is very excited to cook for us!) so dinner is taken care of.

Hey another thought. If anyone wants to bring pumkin carving gear, that could be fun while dinner is cooking.

  15. Michelle Says:

Ahhh, so many Jens’. I just referenced our neighbor Jen. Nic I have a nalgene for the captn if you don’t have one!

  16. Nichole Says:

All sounds fab-u-lous! Michelle you read my mind about the pumpkin carving. However, depending on how inebriated I am, I may just end up eating my stew out of the pumpkin to avoid losing a finger in a knifing accident. Well see how the night goes. Love-it!

  17. Michelle Says:

Dont forget flashlights and if you have a compass bring it along.

    Yeah fun… soo excited.

  18. DMAC Says:

I was just talking to Michelle, and was wondering if anyone is actually gonna make it up on friday night besides her and I. Les and Jen will be up saturday morning, so will Nichole by her post; Tobi, Barry, Jen and her man, I don’t know about.

If ya’ll are coming up on saturday morning should we buy breakfast for ya ? Please advise.

Ohh and we got the lunch fixin’s so just show up and put together a sandwhich.

Aaron, Dawn, Neel, Meghan, Joel, and all others who are out there are always welcome to come camping with us. Actually, I really wish you would fly out and join us. its a very short distance from westchester airport.

  19. California Jen Says:

Nichole, I would love the hummus and veggies if you are still up to it. I’ve become more fond of the combination since getting pregnant.

I’ll bring the topping for the apple crisp. Michelle, have you already gotten apples or do I need to bring some?

I can’t wait to see ya’ll on Saturday. I’m so excited.

  20. DMAC Says:

I don’t think neighbor Jen knows of the website (Yet)[don't know if its okay to spread the word, but i did it anyway with Nichole]. I doubt if Ray’s Jen (RJ) will ever post here. I think for now, you’re safe as just Jen, rather than California Jen, or preggers Jen, or JDC.

  21. Les Sr. Says:

    “Hummus…It tastes like dirt”

  22. Tobi Says:

I was hugging baby on Cameltoe Island.

Anyway, me and B will be up on Saturday morning. Don’t worry about breakie for us. We’ll probably be there about noon-ish.

  23. Nichole Says:

Don’t count on us for breakfast on Saturday. Rob and I will grab something before we leave the house. I’m going grocery shopping tomorrow night if you want me to pick up muffins or bagels for Sunday? Also, for anyone else who agrees with Lester, I’ll be sure to bring some guacamole to accompany my dirt;) P.S. Who’s on cider duty? Cause I can pick up 2 gallons and spike them before I leave the house if you’d like.

  24. Tobi Says:

I’m on cider duty. Doing spiked and unspiked versions. Also bringing coacoa and something make it fun for big kids.

    Michelle said she bring brandy. (Does anyone else that song in their head when they hear that? “Bran-day, you’re so fiiine girl. What a good wife you would beeee…” }

  25. Lester Says:

but my life my love and my lady is the sea do do dodo.
    Ok name the artist…

  26. Aaron Says:

    Looking Glass

  27. Michelle Says:

Great trip guys. I had a lot of fun and look forward to the next one. Is that the Winter BBQ and sledding?

  28. DMAC Says:

Aye, it was a blast cully!

Quite possibly the most relaxing yet action packed 24 hours I have had in a while.

  29. Norm Says:

Okay…since we are on the subject of camping….I thought I would share a question for Lester (the REI god)

I have a North Face 3 season sleeping bag. It’s rated down to 20 degF. At least it says so on the bag. It’s a mummy style, with a single zip down the side. I don’t have model numbers handy.

So I check the weather before I leave on the trip. Lows in the upper 40’s at night, so I think no problem, I don’t need to dig out the -20 bag out of the attic, right? I get in my bag at night all warm, but the bag keeps losing heat all night. By morning, the bottom of the sleeping bag is ice cold, my feet are cold, and I have a wool hat on my head at the top of the sleeping bag.

I checked the thermometer, didn’t even drop below 45…What gives?

    Thoughts?

  30. Aaron Says:

Do you store your bag stuffed. If so, you’ve compacted the fill, which greatly reduces the insulation ability.

    That’s my two cents.

(I’ve lived with the “REI god”)

  31. Norm Says:

Nope, I leave it un-stuffed under the bed next to my opened therm-a-rest…..

  32. Lester Says:

    Down or synthetic?
    How old is it?
Did you use your Therm a rest?
The name of the bag should be on the tag with the rating as well as what the fill is.
Did you wear fresh clothes to bed?
I went out the same weekend in my +15 bag, but I still wore ultra light long bottoms and a hoodie. You should have a little something on, synthetic and mouisture wicking would be ideal.
The good news is it’s a TNF bag, Contact them, get an RA#
(return Authorization) and send it to them for re-filling. mmmmm filling. Their products are so good they will take care of it and make it right, even if it is the same bag you’ve had since your sisters beat you silly.
By the way Norm, Eric called while I was typing this and he says “shut up Norm”.
This would be a good bag at a great price, it even has a special feature for your tootsies. http://www.rei.com/product/747403 and is probably better than TNF. Marmot makes the best gear. Although if you are a gear freak like me the helium is the most coveted.
I’m open for more questions Norm, but we’ll have to go Hannibal Lecter, quid pro quo I have axle swap and lift questions. mmmmm big meats.

  33. Norm Says:

    I’ll get the details tonight….

As far as your jeep goes….

How much lift do you want? Put another way, how big of a tire do you want to put under the truck?

  34. Lester Says:

As big as my rims allow for now.
    2 inch budget boost, skyjacker

  35. Lester Says:

Jeep forums.com under the TJ discussion.

  36. Norm Says:

Okay Lester here are the details:

    Down or synthetic?
I can only imagine it’s synthetic. Reads Polarguard Classic on label.

    How old is it?
I bought it to replace the one I bought out in AZ when it rolled out the back of my truck back in 2002….so I would guess less than 5 years old.

Did you use your Therm a rest?
Yep same Base Camp Rest model I have been using since high school…..

The name of the bag should be on the tag with the rating as well as what the fill is.

    Name: Trinity
    Insulation: Polarguard Classic
    Comfort Rating: 20F/-7C

Did you wear fresh clothes to bed?

Took off everything and put on a fresh pair of thermals. Medium weight shirt and long pants. Synthetic and moisture wicking. Cotton Beanie hat to keep the chill off my head….

    Any more ???

  37. Lester Says:

Sounds like it’s time to send it in for a refilling. Tell me you bought it at REI as a member?
    Polarguard, is good, not great.
Liners are inexpensive ways to upgrade as well.

  38. Norm Says:

    1. I would of never bought it….it was a gift to replace the one lost out of my truck.

It’s bad enough, that I so hard to buy for…so I took it and use it all the time. It keeps her happy and I’m not such a ungrateful bastard at Christmas and Birthdays….

BTW there isn’t an REI store located within a days drive of here so I’m sure it was bought at a local sporting goods store. Probably Blue Ridge Mountain Sports….if I had to guess.

  39. Lester Says:

There will be an REI in Richmond within 2 years. I will try to work that grand opening event.
There are tons in NC and in Baileys Crossroads VA

  40. Norm Says:

So I have to wait two years for a RMA?

  41. Lester Says:

No, get it from North Face, deal directly with the manufacturer, not the retailer.Call them or get on the intertron thing. Send it to them in San Leadro. They will refill the bag or give you a new one. It’s bettter that way. Lifetime guarantee.

  42. Norm Says:

No RMA numbers issued….just send it in…

cool. I’ll box it up this weekend…

  43. Lester Says:

Sweet. Things like that are the answer to the question “why does it cost so much?”
